Putting science into practice: moderation and training for better utilisation of results

Does your research yield exciting results that could benefit a broad audience?

Many dedicated experts from the scientific community would like to present their findings to a wider audience during workshops. They want to motivate people to take action and, for example, improve habitats in their waters or enhance water retention. However, there is often concern that misunderstandings may arise and that discussions may not be properly captured.

This type of event therefore requires a separation of the roles of speaker and moderator. The moderator motivates and structures the discussion, while the experts focus on their expertise and do not have to worry about the time frame. In a series of (almost) identical events, the financial cost of external moderation is high, if only because of the considerable travel expenses involved.

That is why I have developed a training programme together with Claudia Schelp (schelp-mediation) that enables team members to take on the moderation role independently.

Our approach:

  1. Develop an event concept that fits the event objectives and can be easily taken on by less experienced moderators
  2. Introductory training (max. 12 team members) – moderation techniques and time management
  3. Co-facilitation: the first events together with an experienced facilitator.
  4. Independent facilitation – the science team takes over.
  5. Quality assurance through accompanying coaching: reflection – if necessary: methodology training (optional: online)

We are currently implementing this approach in the Angelgewässer project.
